Gig coming up: A playlist for right now

We were super keen to contribute a gig to International Women's Week, but what should we sing? It turned out that putting together a set list that we thought was worthy of celebrating women was harder than we thought. Could we include old show favourites that had fun music but failed the Bechdel test? Would the whole set turn out too depressing?! After much discussion and rummaging around our bursting-at-the-seams folders of music, we've come up with a pretty good selection, ranging from our own compositions (including a premiere for Cath's lovely song about what we can learn when wild swimming) to traditional songs telling women's' stories from the home and work. We've got some songs celebrating activism by women (another premiere, this time from Annaliese, based on words by Greta Thunberg), as well as whole communities (a welcome reprise for Farewell to Stromness). We've got some new challenges including a raucous tune in ancient Finnish about the exploits of a lass named Ieva, and some old favourites; who doesn't want to hear the story of the Bishnoi again?!. And it wouldn't be a Barberellas gig without a couple of songs that we just want to sing shoehorned in for us all to enjoy. So we will all get to visit The Churchyard and Teach the World to sing. It's going to be great fun! Come and join us on Sunday 6th March at 3pm at our new favourite venue, the Bluebird Bakery (201 Acomb Rd, YO24 3HD). No need to book, everyone welcome. Donations on the door towards Practical Action will be gratefully received.

It won't be as cold as it was at this gig!
